Daisy can’t wait to meet you at Blog Paws this year! Let us know if you are coming!
The Unsinkable Molly Brown
No, this isn’t going to be an essay on a famous passenger on the RMS Titanic. So kids, if you are looking for help with your homework you better get back to google.
Miss Molly Brown is my new foster! She’s fresh from a different foster home where she was able to raise her singleton pup. He’s now been adopted and she is here for a little TLC and some more one on one attention. She did have a rough time before she came into rescue. We aren’t looking back though-it’s only getting better.
This sweet girl is about 60 pounds but she’s quite short and compact. She has wrinkles like a bloodhound but without the extra-large size. She is playing with toys for the first time and has started playing and wrestling with Daisy and Bella (when Bella will play) out in the back yard! She is very well behaved in the house and completely house trained. She does snore-but its cute. Molly’s main issue is that she does have hand shyness if you try to reach out and grab her collar. She will either dart out of reach or completely freeze. I’m not sure what happened in her former life, but we are working on it.
Mr. Cottontail
Warning! This post contains small animal death with photos. You’ve been warned.
So, the other morning we had quite the adrenaline rush in the coonhound house. I have a fully fenced (6 foot) backyard. The squirrels tend to love all the trees but of course, they come and go and sit up high to torture poor Daisy with their swishy tails. Since I am accustomed to this type of security I never think twice about just opening the door to let the girls out. Well, somehow the other morning a bunny had found its way into my backyard during the night. I opened the door…it saw us, and we saw it just about the same time. I helplessly yelled “Giiiirrrllls!!! Nnnnooooo!!” As they took off running in hot pursuit. I grabbed the pile of leashes at the door but of course, it was too late. In my mind I knew no matter what, the bunny was trapped and I wouldn’t be quick enough to save it. Bella caught in in under 30 yards. The girl is FAST. The bunny didn’t suffer.
Why share this story? Well, it’s more because of how differently my dogs reacted to the bunny in the backyard. Bella has the killer instinct. She is the only one who has ever caught any prey animal. However, if you would see her in the yard she isn’t focused on the squirrels like Daisy. She likes to relax and lay in the sun. However, put a headlamp on and leash her up and she thinks it is time to hunt! Daisy, from the untrained eye, would see more “huntress”. She’s not. She is a show pony! It is all yell and no action. With the bunny, she took off chasing and yelling but it was more the love of her own voice I think, rather than the thrill of the hunt, that got her going. Once the bunny wasn’t moving, she lost interest quite quickly.
My raw feeding friends said I should have froze the bunny so Bella could have had it later. I decided to continue the circle of life instead. I walked down to our roost of vultures and left dear Peter under a tree for them. Of course, in true mother pride I took a photo of Bella’s prize for posterity’s sake.
Happy Easter Everyone!
Risotto has a Home!
This past weekend my sweet foster Risotto-who is called Rizzie, went to her new home. It has been a couple days and I’m feeling great about it. On the long drive home I was terribly heartbroken and wondering if I could ever foster again. Then I got the picture of the kid/dog pile on a bed in her new home and I knew we’d both be just fine. She loves kids and now she has some to call her own! I knew she’d be okay with cats and she is-in fact she is a bit afraid of them right now.
Foster Grandpa got Rizzie some great flowers in celebration of getting her own home. The card said “I hope your next couch is the best”.
Personally, I will forever be grateful to Rizzie for teaching my Daisy that sleeping in the bed with me is a good thing! I always wanted a bed dog and now I have one.
Here are some last pictures of Rizzie and her flowers. As you can see Bella and Daisy were also interested in her gift.
I know you might have missed me around here but if you are on Instagram or Facebook be sure to follow me! I have been a lot more active over there recently.
Merry (belated) Christmas!
The girls and I had such a good time during Christmas this year! This is going to be one whirlwind post to catch all of you up on everything.
First, we participated in the blogger card exchange, plus a bunch of coonhound and dog lover friends of mine exchanged cards. This meant I hung my cards WITH the girls’. Otherwise, my pile would have been quite pitiful indeed. I like having all my cards up on display. I may not take them down until Valentine’s Day. They just make me happy.
Second, Daisy and Bella both exchanged gifts with other dog friends out there with blogs! Thank you both for being patient! I know you have wanted to see pictures of the girls enjoying their presents.
Daisy was very excited to open presents this year. She tore through paper and chewed up boxes. She received a box from LadyBug over at BichonPawz. It had some of her favorite things ever! Squeakies!!! They are in the shape of corn, bread, and potatoes, LOL! She also has a couple chew bones to munch on for snack time. I tried to get a picture of her posing all cute with her gifts. She would have NONE of it!! She was so excited and just wanted to play. It has been a couple weeks now and she is STILL running around with the corn in her mouth! I’m not sure what it is about that particular one….but she loves it. Now, if I could just get her to understand that when I’m on the phone is NOT when you should pick them up to start playing!
Thank you so much LadyBug! Daisy is still enjoying her toys.
Next was Bella’s turn! In typical Bella fashion she was totally unsure of what was going on. She would come in, sniff, then run back to her hallway (her safe place at Grannie and Grandpa’s) to watch what we would do next. Luckily her reluctance to play in the wrapping and tissue paper and tear open boxes has no affect on how much she loves her gifts from Millie over at Bird Brains and Dog Tales. Bella loves her Blankie (as do I, Millie’s mom has major talent)!! It was funny….after we made her pose for these kinda corny pictures we put the blanket down in the hall where she likes to sleep…she walked right over and plopped down, curled up and was out like a light! She knew exactly what it was, and what it was for and has used it since coming back home. Mostly her sisters leave it alone. Mostly. Right now as I type Rizzie is using it to sleep. It’s good Bella doesn’t mind sharing occasionally. She also got a beautiful bandana that says ‘Rescue’. *I* love that. She’ll be wearing it when I have to take her anywhere! Since the camera tends to make her anxious, there aren’t as many pictures of her. Also, she says the treats that were in her box were great….they are loooong gone!
Finally, in typical toddler-like fashion, some kids like playing with the boxes more than the presents!! Oh, Daisy!
