New Developments

Shhh! I'm sleeping!

So, some will read this post in horror, others will be happy as am I.

I wanted a dog who would relax with me and lay on the couch.  Turns out, Bella is not that dog.  She is much happier with her feet on the ground.  I’m ok with that. She has on many occasions jumped up to ge a pet or maybe a treat but as soon as she realizes she isn’t on a firm surface, she jumps right back down.  The only exception to this is when she was sick. She came up cuddled with me, jumped off, threw up, collapsed and had to go to the ER.  So, Bella on the couch = scary.

Today Daisy Mae was  in a particularly cuddly, affectionate mood.  She jumped to put her front feet on my shoulders while I was sitting on the couch. So,  got a sheet to cover it and convinced her sitting next to me was cool.  She laid there until it was time to go to the dog park.  When we got home, after dinner, she came over and started sniffing her place on the couch so I told her “come on” and patted the cushion.  She jumped right up and has been next to me for the last few hours.

I love it!

MOM! The flash is too bright!

Friday Fun

So, Grandpa has moseyed on home.  Bella did try and sniff him a few times and she let him pet her for several minutes last night.  They might be friends yet!  Thanks to Grandpa for taking the coonhound mobile to be cleaned!  Too bad they will have it dirty by tonight….

In other odd news the girls and I were laying taking a nap earlier this afternoon.  Fedex scared me to death when they knocked on the door really REALLY loud!  It was the first time I’ve ever heard Daisy growl!  That’s right, she stood up and growled at the door. I may have a guard dog yet!

It's a Happy Weekend….

when Grannie comes!

My girls love my mom.  Seriously, sometimes I think Bella actually likes her more than me.  Then again, she doesn’t even have to work for treats from Grannie. No sit, down or anything!  It’s ridiculous.

We bought some new medicated shampoo and conditioner for Daisy.  The shampoo has lidocaine, hydrocortisone and something else in it.  The conditioner has an antifungal plus lots of moisturizers.  I had given Daisy a bath on Thursday but on Friday all her skin on her back peeled off, along with a lot of her fur.

Daisy also got her first squeaky toy.  Its a little hedgehog with a Christmas hat. She is very happy to have that toy.  Even better, Bella isn’t so scared as she was when she first came to live with me.  In fact, a few times she was pretty curious about what was going on.

On Sunday we went to our normal dog park and met a bloodhound that was rescued from the same rescue as Daisy.  She was sooo cute and a year and a half old.  I loved that Daisy wasn’t the only dog with big floppy ears going every which a way when she was running around.

In other news:  When Daisy was found I knew she had a little girl puppy with her. That puppy was adopted and I’ve seen the update online and she seems very happy.  Well, the people who found her apparently decided to keep a little boy puppy that was with her. Now, they are moving and don’t want to take him with them.  Poor guy.  If anyone is looking for a great dog, I can at least vouch for his mother’s temperament. Coonhounds are very independent and think with their noses most of the time.  But, they love their owners and are very sweet dogs. Of course at 10 months he’s sure to have a lot of energy but his mom is pretty mellow at age three.  If anyone is interested or knows someone who is please consider this sweet guy: Her Little Boy

Last Saturday….

I know, I know, I’m telling y’all stuff that happened a long time ago.  But I haven’t told you yet so it’s new to you anyway!

Last Saturday morning Daisy and I went to a farmers market.  Well, I thought it was going to be a little thing with some food and produce stands. Boy was I wrong!  This place was so busy and an absolute madhouse! It was so busy and so amazing!

We had to park in a parking garage a couple blocks away.  She did great walking through busy city streets. As soon as we got to the first corner of booths some random guy comes up and goes “is that a real black and tan coonhound”? What I wanted to say was “no, she is a figment of your imagination; the heat must be getting to you.” But I didn’t. Turns out he was raised with B&T’s and his parents bred them for hunting for a while. He took a picture of her to send to his parents. This place was crowded. People were packed in. Right now there was actually only one produce stand. Most of the places were selling foods and crafts. One bakery had brought propane ovens and was selling warm breads right out of the oven. Many of the farmers come later in the season when more stuff is ready for harvest.

Several places had water bowls out for the dogs which I thought was nice. It was hot.  Several also had dog treats for the dogs.  Daisy did so great!  you would think I actually trained her for something like this, but I haven’t. She stayed right by my side and didn’t pull my arm off trying to get to the good smells. She resisted table surfing at all the food booths.  She also took her first elevator ride. She’s a champ at this stuff.  She didn’t smell too many butts.  She was exhausted when she got home.  Behaving made her work hard!

Yesterday was bath day. So we went to the beach dog park. I could not get Bella in a picture to save my life!  So instead you are getting Daisy, enjoying the smells and ignoring the big cruise ship passing taking all those lucky people on vacation.  So, the girls were walking down the beach….one reason I like this park is it is 100% fenced in….except for the new hole that leads into an airport.  They were down on the beach which is very rocky so I was up on the seawall which at the end is about 6 feet high.  Well, I am looking and all of the sudden I realize Bella is on the other side of the fence!

I had to walk way back the wrong way to get down to the beach.  Bella has been down there many times and this hasn’t happened. Once I’m down there I see Daisy has went over too.  Turns out there is a hole in the fence.  So I stayed calm and just walked to the fence (ready to trespass onto airport property to get the girls).  When I got there I just called their names in my friendliest voice and told them to “come on” and they turned right around.  That side has huge boulders all over the beach (to keep boats from coming onto shore) so Bella was smart and went down into the water and walked on the sand but Daisy took her time slowly climbing back over the rocks.  I was sweating that one. I knew if anything smelled too good they might not want to come back.

They are all clean and ready for company this weekend!

What boat? I don't smell a boat!

Last Thursday….

So, last Thursday Daisy and I went to a ‘movies in the park’ event in a city near me.  I knew Bella would hate going because of the crowds and noise so she had to stay home. Don’t worry, she got lots of extra lovin’ from me!

We were very lucky to find a parking spot really close to where the movie was being held. I decided Daisy was going to have to work for her fun and packed her backpack with our drinks and snacks. I had a couple crystal light teas and popcorn for me, some water and two frozen kongs for her.  She carried her backpack like a champ even though some old man made a smart-ass remark about me making her do all the work. I have a great blanket that is water resistant nylon on one side and paw print fleece on the other to use when we go places.

So, they had live BLUEGRASS music starting about an hour before the movie. I love bluegrass music!  They also had food vendors set up selling things like burgers and kettle corn. I didn’t even go look at what they had because I brought my own!

She behaved like an angel!  She LOVED the kongs of course and laid right on the blanket to eat them. She whined a little in the middle of the movie but overall was very quiet.  The only weird thing that happened was when she saw the police horses…she went into instant predator mode!  I’m glad they were far away.  Also, the area was set up with surround sound and some of the noise scared her. She actually laid next to me trembling a bit so I gave her treats to let her know I was happy with her laying with me. She recovered fine.

We sat next to a couple who just loved her! In fact, several people just loved her that night. Not too many drop dead gorgeous coonhounds around here.

Yummy Kong!
