Happy New Year!!!

So, let me tell you about Christmas morning with the girls. The grandparents were here to deliver presents and Santa came for Bella and Daisy!

Daisy is like the little kid who wants to help open everyone’s presents. She was so interested in everything and wanted to smell it as you were opening it.  Her tail never stopped wagging, she was just so happy that we were happy and that she got to be included!  When it was her turn to open gifts she was sooo excited!  She dove into the tissue to find a new squeaky toy. I think her favorite new toy is her flirt pole. It has a squeaky squirrel on the end.

Bella was very interested in her boxes. She was also very nervous because grandpa was here and he was holding a camera.  But, she did well and laid and watched all the excitement. She rolled her eyes at Daisy’s exuberance (well, that is what I think I saw).  Once it was her turn she went right over to Grannie who was helping with the gifts. She likes smelling everything as it was opened.  Of course, Daisy wanted to help with Bella’s too.

Both of the girls love their new rhinestone collars and custom bandannas (with their names and everything!).  They both got food toys. Daisy loves hers and I’m helping Bella learn how to play with hers.  They ended their morning snacking on new bully sticks.

Santa came!!!

Pretty new collar!

This smells good!

Grannie! Open it faster! Hurry!

OMG!!!!! It squeaks! Get the paper off!!

Bella likes the squeaky too

Bully sticks for Christmas!

I think I'd rather shiver than wear this.

Letters to Santa..

Hey Santa,

Sorry I didn’t write yesterday, I was a little busy guarding the balcony from the squirrels.  Then I had to take a couple naps.  I’m really a great coonhound!  I bay at the squirrels and try to chase the cats; I can reach my own treats in the table when I want them…oh wait, um..  I’m sorry!  I really do try to be a good girl!  It’s my nose! It’s a curse I tell you!  I was trying to play with the squirrels, yeah, that’s it!  And I was just making sure Mom’s bike was working-that’s why I chewed on her pedal!

So, I guess I won’t be getting anything from you Santa.  I don’t think it’s fair we have to be good all year!  I can be good for like 10 whole minutes; shouldn’t that count?!?  If I could make a list I’d put treats, and squeaky toys, and treats, and squeaky toys, and maybe something fun to put my food in, and treats….wait, I think I said that one already.

Please forgive me Santa,

Your delightfully playful Coonhound Daisy

A quick note from Mom:

Santa, both of the girls have been very good this year. Bella has grown up so much and I am so proud.  Daisy might get into things a bit, but she keeps me laughing and that is good enough for me!  I hope you remember them on your trip this year.

Letters to Santa…

Dearest Santa,

Bella here.  I want you to know I have tried to be a very good girl this year. I’m sorry for running away that one day that scared Mom and for being sick on the carpet twice. I promise I didn’t mean it!  I have been a very good girl since Mom brought me home.  When I got here I didn’t really didn’t know what I wanted-everything scared me but Mom and Daisy have been working to find things that I like.

So Santa, if you have a little room in your sleigh for some gifts for me I would really appreciate it.  If I’m allowed to ask for things then I’d like some yummy treats to chew on, and some pretty collars to wear when I get to go special places. I promise  I won’t get them dirty!  I’ve also been thinking that perhaps I could try having my own squeaky toy. But if you can’t do this, I’ll understand. I’m happy just to hang out here in my new home!

Thank you,

The Sweetest Bluetick Bella

Cold Weather Willies

So the cold weather has finally hit out area and its has certainly caused the girls to act a little funny.  Mostly they are wimps. They shiver when its 68 in my house.  I’m glad it doesn’t snow here!

Today they decided to go crazy at the dog park.  Daisy started by chasing seagulls. I’m not sure why she thinks she can catch them, but I just laugh and don’t ruin her fun.  Then someone came in with a squeaky ball.  Worse, it was a puppy!  Well, Daisy was on that ball like white on rice.  I was so worried and I tried to get the ball and give it back to the man and tell him Daisy would destroy it. He didn’t care.

Well, about that time several other dogs showed up. It was a squeaky ball free for all!  One of the guys had another squeaky ball he went and got out of his car.  Daisy and a few of the dogs ran, and ran, and ran for the squeakies.  Daisy didn’t resource guard once!  Yay! She has laid down and put her paws and head over the ball and growled really low at other dogs one other time. Since then, I’ve been careful about avoiding squeakies at the dog park.  She even let some guy come and get the ball from her to be thrown again. She had a great time!  She came home, ate dinner, and walked straight to her crate and put herself to bed for the night! I have never seen her run so hard for so long, we were there over an hour with her almost constantly running.

While that was going on Bella was hanging around too. When we first got there, I almost went to put her in the car. She was shivering sooo hard!  Our high was 53 today, nothing extreme.  She seemed to really like one of the other dogs that came in and started running around a bit. She’d do her grass rolling thing, then try to chase another dog or two.  She really started trying to get involved when the dogs were bringing the squeaky toys back.  Then this little black fluff puff puppy came in and Bella took off!  She play bowed and wrestled. I don’t mean a little paw slap-I mean full n wrestle, pinning the dog on the ground and chasing and going crazy!  She would pin the puppy a second, then jump off in a play bow wagging her tail like “hurry get up so we can go again!” I am sure the other owners didn’t understand why I was laughing and clapping and so happy. It was the first time Bella has all out wrestled another dog and let them jump on her without it making her unhappy.  It was such a great day!

I get 'Crazy Eyes' when I get a squeaky toy!

The Evolution of the Squeaky Toy

I was a very excited dog owner when I brought Bella home. I had to stop to buy all the dog things I needed when I adopted her-I had nothing before because I was open to dogs of any size.  So along with the basics I also bought squeaky toys and kongs.

Needless to say when I finally convinced Bella that it was ok to come see me out of her crate and tried to play with that squeaky toy-she darted right back in. I tried to give it some time.  I was told by some great people to let her settle in, take it at her pace, and let her decide when and how to come out of her shell. I tried several more times to get her to engage with the toys but she wanted no part.

Daisy came along and I didn’t buy any squeakies.  I was worried that Daisy playing with them would frighten Bella. Don’t worry, Daisy had other toys. Then Grannie bought the hedgehog.  Daisy was beyond thrilled with life. These wonderful things sound like they are dying as you bite them!  Heavenly bliss.  Bella was less thrilled by the intruders in her home but she was no longer running.

Well, it has been 8 months since I brought Bella home. I have taken the advice of others and let her come out of her shell at her own pace (ok, perhaps with some phamacutical help).  Yesterday she finally decided squeaky toys are pretty fun and even played tug with Daisy to try and get one!  She ran off with Mr. Raccoon trying to unstuff him, or unsqueak him or whatever it is the dogs are trying to do with these toys.

So from running and hiding in her crate to today we get this:

I'll get you Raccoon!
